Brain Oedema and Intracranial Pressure in Superior Sagittal Sinus Balloon Occlusion. An Experimental Study in Pigs

1990

About 2/3 of all patients with thrombosis of the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) develop signs of increased ICP and/or brain oedema (BE). The time of onset and the spectrum of symptoms in SSS thrombosis vary extremely. This variability might be caused by differences in pathomechanism like BE and rise of ICP, parameters studied in the present contribution.

nrCBF and EEG Monitoring During Probatory Balloon Occlusion of the Internal Carotid Artery

1985

Surgical treatment of tumors in the neck and throat rounding the carotid artery or of giant aneurysms originating from this vessel often makes ligation or resection of the internal carotid artery necessary. This procedure carries a 15%–30% morbidity from cerebral ischemia according to the literature (2, 7).

Ballon occlusion of the renal artery in tumor nephrectomy.

1975

AbstractA method of preoperative intraluminal occlusion of the renal artery in cases of kidney tumors using a 5F Swan-Ganz balloon catheter is presented. The procedure was used in 26 tumor nephrectomies without complications and resulted in marked facilitation of the operation in 70 per cent of the cases.

Successful tracheal occlusion using ultrathin fetoscopic equipment combined with real-time three-dimensional ultrasound.

2008

Objective: The most common complication of intrauterine tracheal balloon occlusion is the preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) which increases the rate of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Ultrathin fetoscopy may be a method of reducing the risk of PPROM. Materials and Methods: The operation was performed at the 27th week of gestation after sedation and relaxation of a fetus with bilateral congenital diaphragmatic hernia and with the liver lifted upwards into the thorax. An ultrathin sheath with a 1.2-mm fetoscope was used under real-time 3-D ultrasound guidance. The patient delivered in the 38th week of gestation and did not display PPROM aft…

Simultaneous Balloon Occlusion of the Renal Artery and Hypothermic Perfusion in in Situ Surgery of the Kidney

1978

AbstractRenal ischemia and cooling may be achieved by intraluminal balloon occlusion and intermittent hypothermic perfusion using a double lumen, balloon-tipped catheter introduced into the renal artery percutaneously. This technique was used successfully in 26 of 31 extensive nephrolithotomies, eliminating the need for dissection and clamping of the renal artery and intricate surface cooling. Intrarenal operations could be performed as effectively as with clamp occlusion. Despite a mean ischemia time of 54 minutes the individual 131I-hippuran clearance of the operated kidneys was only reduced to a mean 78.4 per cent of the preoperative value 2 to 3 weeks postoperatively and increased to 92…

Role of balloon occlusion for mononuclear bone marrow cell deposition after intracoronary injection in pigs with reperfused myocardial infarction

2008

Aims In clinical studies on cell therapy for acute myocardial infarction (MI), cells are usually applied by intracoronary infusion with balloon (IC/B). To test the utility of balloon occlusion, mononuclear bone marrow cell (MNC) retention after intracoronary infusion without balloon (IC/noB) was compared with IC/B and intramyocardial (IM) injection. Methods and results Four hours after LAD ligation in male pigs, reperfusion was allowed (confirmed by coronary angiography). Five days later, 1 × 108 autologous 111Indium-labelled MNC were injected IC/noB ( n = 4), IC/B ( n = 4), or IM ( n = 4). At 1 h the fraction of injected MNC that was detected in the heart was 4.1 ± 1.1% after IC/noB inject…

Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) in patients with major trauma and uncontrolled haemorrhagic shock: a systematic rev…

2021

AbstractBackgroundMultiple studies regarding the use of Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta (REBOA) in patients with non-compressible torso injuries and uncontrolled haemorrhagic shock were recently published. To date, the clinical evidence of the efficacy of REBOA is still debated. We aimed to conduct a systematic review assessing the clinical efficacy and safety of REBOA in patients with major trauma and uncontrolled haemorrhagic shock.MethodsWe systematically searched MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE and CENTRAL up to June 2020. All randomized controlled trials and observational studies that investigated the use of REBOA compared to resuscitative thoracotomy (RT) with/witho…

Vertebrobasilar junction giant aneurysm: Lessons learned from a neurosurgical audit and anatomical investigation.

2015

The treatment of vascular lesions of the vertebrobasilar junction (VBJ) remains a challenging task in the neurosurgical practice and the gold standard therapy is still under debate. In this article, the authors report a detailed postmortem study of a VBJ giant aneurysm (GA) previously endovascularly treated. Although the decision-making process for the vast majority of neurosurgical treatment can nowadays be accurately carried out during the preoperative planning (i.e., with the aid of neuroimaging fusion protocols, neuronavigation platforms, etc.) meant to maximize the anatomical understanding of the lesions and minimize possible intraprocedural challenges, this postmortem study represents…
